Singapore & India partner to create Green & Digital Shipping Corridor

A partnership has been formed to establish the Singapore-India Green and Digital Shipping Corridor, designed to promote the adoption of zero-emission technologies and digital solutions in the maritime sector. The Letter of Intent was signed on March 25th by Mr. Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, and Mr. R. Lakshmanan, Joint Secretary of India’s MoPSW. The ceremony was attended by Dr. Amy Khor and Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal.

Puyallup Tribe enters maritime industry with major port terminal project

The Puyallup Tribe is entering global maritime commerce by developing its own international shipping terminal on tribal land in southwest Washington. This landmark project, in partnership with the Northwest Seaport Alliance, involves transforming 22 acres into a tribally owned terminal. Located on the East Blair Waterway, the new berth will expand the region’s shipping capacity. The tribe and NWSA will jointly market the facilities, with Puyallup Tribal Enterprises overseeing operations. This initiative is expected to boost economic activity for both the tribe and the region.

Railways Expands Dedicated Freight Corridor Network

The Ministry of Railways is advancing the construction of two Dedicated Freight Corridors: the Eastern DFC (1,337 km) and the Western DFC (1,506 km). With 96.4% of the 2,843 km operational, work continues on the remaining sections. The Ministry is also preparing Detailed Project Reports for three new corridors: East-Coast, East-West, and North-South Sub-Corridors. These corridors, under review but not yet sanctioned, aim to enhance logistics efficiency, enabling faster freight movement, double-stack trains, and better access to northern hinterlands, particularly for mineral transport.

Maersk begins inland water services across river Ganges in India

Maersk Line, the world’s largest container shipping company, is one of the first to enter India’s National Waterway-1, a commercial inland waterway along the Ganges River. India’s inland water transport sector has faced challenges due to inadequate infrastructure and funding. However, the government’s Sagar Mala Programme, investing $120 billion by 2035, aims to improve logistics. The Ganges, with its length and terrain, was chosen for its potential. Maersk’s involvement is expected to boost freight movement, offering cost-effective shipping alternatives and linking India’s hinterlands to global trade via the Bay of Bengal.

MoPSW targets to finish 150 maritime projects by September 2025

India is set to develop its first Coastal Green Shipping Corridor along the Kandla-Tuticorin route to promote eco-friendly maritime transport. As part of its broader strategy, the MoPSW aims to complete 150 maritime projects by September 2025. Key initiatives include increasing shipbuilding capacity, establishing the Bharat Container Shipping Line, and introducing green technologies in ports, such as Green Tugs and the Harbour Craft Green Transition Program. Additionally, Rs 100 crores will be invested in improving infrastructure on national waterways in Jammu & Kashmir to enhance cargo and tourism.
