The Indian ship repair market is largely limited to repair of ships plying in Coastal waters of India. It has advised Government Ports to explore possibilities of setting up large repair facilities in their ports.

There are a few shipyards on the East Coast and West Coast of India catering to Ship Repair industry. The exiting shipyards could be upgraded to target wider and larger market. New shipyards could be developed for catering to additional repair business. Some of the existing repair yards of India include Cochin Shipyard, Chowgule ship repair, Mumbai Port repair yards (Hughes Drydock), Kandla Port, etc are on the West Coast of India. The repair yards on the East Coast of India include Hindustan Shipyard and a few others focusing on repair of small ships.

Modernizing for Growth

Indian shipyards needs to further modernizing and create new infrastructures to attract repair business. Investments in dry docks, floating docks, and advanced repair technologies are essential to cater to market. 

Focus to Global from Local

The existing repair yards would need to increase focus to global market from existing focus on domestic fleet that includes coastal vessels, harbour crafts, etc. 

Vision for International Expansion

India needs to scale up its facilities and services to convince ship calling to Indian ports for trade plan their statutory repairs in Indian yards.  The government’s push to develop large shipyards with modern capabilities is aimed at tapping into this global market, positioning India as a destination for comprehensive, high-quality ship repairs.
